Then and Now: A Historical View of the Methow Valley

Confluence Gallery & Art Center presents “Then and Now: A Historical View of the Methow Valley”
An exhibit that pairs historical photos of the Methow Valley with artists’ contemporary interpretations opens Feb. 28 at Confluence Gallery and Art Center in Twisp.

“Then and Now: A Historical View of the Methow Valley” links the past and present by connecting artists with the rich history of the valley portrayed in a collection of old photographs maintained by Shafer Historical Museum in Winthrop.

More than 20 artists were invited to pore through thousands of archival photos from the museum collection to find an image that inspired them to create a related piece of art. The old photos and new artwork will be displayed together in the gallery.

The photos and contemporary artwork capture the scenery, animals, people, and life of the Methow Valley – then and now. Artists used paintings, photographs and furniture, among other approaches, to provide their modern twist on the past.

Curator and Shafer Museum board member Roxie Miller said she encouraged artists to think about “the idea or philosophy or truth of a picture – maybe not the place itself, but what people are doing at that place or how the activity itself has changed.”

During the exhibit, a collection of photographs of the Methow Valley by photographer Dennis O’Callaghan will be featured in the gallery’s new solo exhibit space.

An opening reception for “Then and Now” will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Feb. 28. The exhibit continues through April 1. Confluence Gallery is located at 104 Glover St. Twisp. For information call 997-2787.
